A Legacy of Brotherhood, Culture, and Impact at Syracuse University

From a shared vision in 1994 to a legacy that spans generations, the Kappa Chapter of Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, Inc. represents a powerful story of Latino unity, perseverance, and pride. What began as a dream among five bold young men has grown into a beacon of leadership, cultural celebration, and lifelong brotherhood at Syracuse University.

Milestones of Cultural Contribution and Campus Involvement

Kid Fest Leadership (1990s)
In the early days, the Kappa Chapter led Kid Fest—an SU-wide initiative to give back to local public school children—by organizing events and inspiring youth.
Sazón Phiota Launch (1999)
Recognizing the lack of Latino representation in campus cuisine, we introduced Sazón Phiota, a dining hall takeover featuring Spanish dishes and dance workshops during Hispanic Heritage Month. It remains an annual SU tradition.
Live Talent Debut (2001)
We brought our first major performance to campus, Oro Solido, and sold out the event—establishing our reputation for bringing vibrant Latin music and energy to SU.
Revival and Growth (2006–2008)
After a lull in activity, Brothers Jonathan Sanchez and Brandon Kim sparked a resurgence in 2006, growing the chapter to 31 active undergraduates. In Spring 2008, we crossed a line of 11—the largest in national Phi Iota Alpha history.
Honoring Jason Morales (2013)
The loss of Brother Jason Morales led to the creation of the Jason Morales Scholarship and Perseverance Award. His legacy lives on through his son’s future scholarship and an annual honor for student resilience.
Spreading the Culture (2014–present)
Brother Daniel Nunez launched Dancing with the Dons, teaching Latino dance styles to non-minority sororities. That same year, our 20th anniversary celebration featured a performance by Vena, continuing our tradition of cultural influence.

This is the Kappa Chapter of Phi Iota Alpha

From its historic roots in Sigma Iota to its founding in 1994 by five trailblazing young men, the Kappa Chapter of Phi Iota Alpha has remained a powerful force for cultural pride, academic excellence, and service at Syracuse University. We have uplifted generations through initiatives like Sazón Phiota, large-scale concerts, and campus-wide outreach programs. Through moments of adversity and triumph, our brotherhood has endured and grown stronger. Today, we stand as the largest Latino fraternal presence on campus, honoring our past while forging ahead with purpose, passion, and pride.
